What is a toothache?
A toothache is pain that emanates from your tooth, simple as that—pain that comes from your tooth.
What are some of the symptoms?
The symptoms can range from mild to severe, but the most common symptom is throbbing, hot or cold sensitivity, or pain to pressure, like when you bite down on something.
What causes a toothache?
Causes often include cavities, a broken tooth, or gum disease. All three of these things can cause you to have a toothache.
Can I treat my toothache at home?
Yes, you can treat the symptoms of the toothache at home simply by taking over-the-counter medications like Tylenol or Motrin. However, you really cannot treat the root cause—no pun intended. You really need a dentist to address the underlying issue, unless you're willing to pull your own tooth at home, and not very many people can do that.
How do dentists treat a toothache?
Often, we need to see you, the patient, and evaluate what is the best treatment we can offer you. Depending on the cause of your toothache, the treatments vary tremendously, and only your dentist can tell you what you need.
Could a toothache be serious?
If you think your toothache could be serious, especially if there's swelling involved, it could be a risk to your overall health. You really want to see a dentist immediately, or even go to the emergency room. It can be, in fact, quite serious.
How can I avoid a toothache?
The most important part is how to avoid all this pain, expense, and time off from work. It's very simple. Like they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Go see your dentist regularly, have your teeth cleaned every six months. We can find things at an early stage and fix them rather quickly and inexpensively. Believe me, nothing is more expensive than letting things go and having to put out a major fire when it can be easily and inexpensively fixed in one visit.
